Jobseeking: As Tough as it Sounds?

In 2010, I had the chance to try a presentation at Ignite Minneapolis. I’m not particularly proud of this presentation, although I think the content itself stands the test of time.

An Ignite Presentation puts you at the mercy of your PowerPoint. You have 5 minutes (after which your mic is turned off), and the slides automatically advance every 15 seconds.

Skip The Video – Here’s the Summary

  1. Each month, every employed person should set the goal of helping one unemployed (or underemployed) person find a job
  2. Nobody’s resume should ever be more than six months out of date
  3. The “Unemployment Rate” is strangely calculated, and non-economists shouldn’t pay attention to it
  4. Whenever possible, the unemployed should treat “finding a job” as their full-time job (citation of great New York Times’ article on the topic)
  5. If you’re unemployed or underemployed, don’t be ashamed to admit it
  6. No quality job will ever require money to interview – those are scams
  7. Don’t become obsessed with hunting on job boards – become obsessed with meeting people at companies where you want to work
